Mark Levin got a second in the 50 Free and third in the 100 Free which qualified him as the 6th individual high point for the men. Both Marshi and Mark were on the 200 Free and 400 Free relays. Congratulations Marshi and Mark!

The 200 Free Relay of Marshi Smith, Lauren Havard, Nina Emerson, and Jacqueline Stilwell did not do their best time at at States but out touched West Springfield for second place. Mark Levin Breaks Record, Boys are Third in Region
Mark Levin was determined. He had it in his mind all season, he was thinking about it all week, he was focused on it all day. He wanted to make the time for Junior Nationals. When he finished the 50 Free with a time of 21.59, he not only made the time for Junior Nationals but won the event and broke the school record. His remarkable performance does not stop with one event. Mark won second place in the 100 Free with his personal best time and was the final leg of the 200 Free Relay that placed second. That incredible relay included Ned Williams, Nick Zysk and Patrick Hopkins made All-American Consideration and will go to States. After prelims the Boys 400 Free Relay was seeded 7th and in the end lane. Mark was lead off man and created a nice lead. The other relay members Nick Zysk, Stephen Burnham and anchor, Ned Williams each did spectacular splits to surprise the whole field and to finish in second place behind South Lakes. That relay dropped 4 seconds from the previous night and will be seeded well at States. Stephen Krebs remains unbeaten this season in diving. He had some competition at this meet but pulled out yet another win. Doug Roper also had a good night and got 11th place in diving. Ned Williams was smooth and fast by placing 7th in the 50 Free and 12th in the 100 Free. In the 100 Back, Stephen Burnham placed 12th. All these points added up to a third place finish for the boys in the Northern Region behind South Lakes and Robinson.

Marshi Smith Leads Girls to Second Place in Regions
Marshi Smith did it again. She finished first in two All-American Consideration swims in the 100 Free and 100 Back and anchored two relays that took second and third. She did a time of 52.65 in the 100 Free to break the school record and add it to her list of 5 school records. The Girls 200 Free relay of Nina Emerson, Lauren Havard, Jacqueline Stilwell and Marshi Smith improved their school record to 1:41.56 and got second place and an All-American Consideration. The 200 Medley Relay (Lauren Havard, Allison Mall, Joanne Kunin and Nina Emerson) that took 4th place and 400 Free Relay (Nina Emerson, Abby Emerson, Jacqueline Stilwell and Marshi Smith) that finished third will go to States this week. Senior, Joanne Kunin will return to States swimming the 200 IM and 100 Fly which she finished 7th and 6th respectively at Regions. Freshman, Nina Besser finished her season with some great dives to get 13th place in diving. Jacqueline Stilwell, a Junior, got 14th in the 50 Free and 12th in the 100 Free. Freshman, Lauren Havard got 10th in the 100 Back.
The culmination of the spectacular swimming and diving was a second place in the Region behind Langley and only 1.5 points ahead of West Springfield. The team and coaches are extremely proud of both our girls and boys team. Good luck at States!

Lady Cavs Dominate Districts
The meet Friday night began with a lot of smoke and noise but that did not
shake the girls' determination to win the Concorde District Championship
this past Saturday night at Wakefield Park.
They succeeded by winning all three relays and Marshi Smith winning her
two individual events. We cannot overlook all the girls who made top 16
(see below) and scored points for the team. Every point was needed because
in the end, Woodson won by only seven points over the girls Oakton team.
During these phenomenal swims, dives and wins, many district records
were broken:
Girls 100 Back:  Marshi Smith   57.63
(also a school record)
Girls 100 Free:  Marshi Smith  53.28
Girls 200 Free Relay:  Nina Emerson
Abby Emerson
Lauren Havard
Marshi Smith
 1:42.94
(also school record)
Girls 400 Free Relay: Nina Emerson
Abby Emerson Jacqueline Stilwell Marshi Smith
 3:43.65

Congratulations to every girl on the Swim and Dive Team.

Woodson Men Take Second to South Lakes
An incredible effort by the Cavalier Men showed they are in top contention
with the likes of South Lakes and TJ. Almost every swimmer and diver
moved up in their seeds and went on to score points for the team to take

led by Seniors Mark Levin and Stephen Krebs who both won their events.
Mark Levin went a 22.00 in the 50 Free, narrowly breaking the District
record while Stephen Krebs won the boys diving crushing his District
record with a score of 562.75. Both are seeded first in Regions. Expect to
see stellar performances from them both. There were a large number of

The Boys Take Down Chantilly and Potomac Falls

The Boys team won both meets this weekend ending the dual meet season with a record of
5-2. Stephen Krebs remains undefeated druing the entire season.
The Cavalier boys crushed the Chantilly Chargers led by Senior Mark Levin and Freshman Stephen Burnham, both who had two individual wins. Other first place finishers were Senior Stephen Krebs in diving, Freshman Trevor Hancock in 100 Fly, Senior Ned Williams in 100 Free, Sophomore Tim Kunin in 500 Free. The Senior 200 Free relay of Ned Williams, Mike Ryan, Grant Begley (coming briefly out of retirement) and Mark Levin took first place. The final score was 192.5-122.5.
At the Potomac Falls meet at Providence the boys did the four man shuffle as they switched in and out of events until everyone was happy. There were some interesting swims (Ned wins the 500 Free and 100 Breast!) and some best times as well. Mark Levin won the 200 Free and 200 IM. Nick Zysk took first place in the 50 Free. Stephen Krebs won the diving. In the 100 Fly Patrick Hopkins finished first. Stephen Burnham won the 100 Back. All three relays were won by the Woodson boys and finished the meet with a 235-60 win.

The Last Concorde District Champs

Our tenure in the Concorde District will soon be over. Beginning next school year Woodson will be moving to the Liberty District. This will the last year the team will compete with TJ, South Lakes and Oakton. That is what makes this meet so meaningful. Four years ago when the new districts were reorganized and renamed, the WTW girls won the first Concorde District Championship. Wouldn't it be fitting to win the last Concorde District Champs that Woodson will be in? It will take 100% from every team member. Not only those who will dive and swim in the meet but those who will be cheering them on. We want to see 100% participation in the meet on both nights. All team members should ride the bus regardless if they are in the meet. The team will meet at 3:00 PM in Cafeteria A and the bus will leave at 3:30 PM. Warm-ups are 4:15-4:35 and the meet will begin at 5:30 PM. Please bring plenty of healthy snacks and water bottles because the meet will be long with 4 heats of each event.
On Saturday, the girls diving will begin earlier. Divers need to be at Wakefield at 3:00 PM and warm-ups will be 3:15-4:15. The diving meet will begin at 4:30 PM. The swimming finals will be at the same time as Friday. We will meet at 3:00 in the Lecture Study and ride the bus to Wakefield at 3:30. Warm-ups are 4:15-4:35 and start of the meet is 5:30 PM. The team will go to Generous George's for dinner after the meet. Remember relays are swum on Saturday only and alternates should be ready to swim.
Since there is no school on Friday, the team will dress up on Thursday to school.

Districts Team Dinner
We will have our last team dinner at Kunin's home on Thursday night after practice. Bring your creative ideas for the posters!

A-E Desserts
F-Le Pasta/Rice Entree
Li-Sa Drinks
Sc-Z Salads or Bread

Rocky Rocks
The team will be watching Rocky the movie at the Unzicker's home this Friday at 1:00 PM. You bring your water bottles and we'll supply the popcorn and carrots. This is a time to relax, enjoy the move and get psyched up!

Eligibility
Eligibility for athletics in Virginia is determined by a student passing five subjects for the semester preceding the one in which they wish to compete. The first semester ends on Thursday, February 4th. No athlete will be able to compete after Feb. 4th until grades have been verified. Forms are due to the coaches no later than Thursday. You may not compete until this is accomplished. Extra forms can be found in the Activities office.

Marshi Smith Smashes Team Record

Marshi went into her race like she goes into every race. Calm, cool and collected. This past Friday night against Thomas Jefferson, she wasn't any different when she came out of the water after the 200 Individual Medley. She was still calm, still cool even though she had just broken the team record by almost 2 seconds. She swam the 200 IM in 2:11.31. Expect to see more team records as well as Concorde District records be broken by this Freshman female swimmer.

Cavalier Girls Crush TJ
By Patrick Hopkins

On Friday, January 22, the Woodson Cavaliers swam against the Thomas Jefferson TI-83s. The Cavalier girls team crushed the 83s with a huge victory of 169-146. they swam hard and with many personal best times, chewed up TJ and spat them out. The men also did well but the intellectual ones pulled some "fast ones" and squeaked by the mens' time. Although the usual 24" guns of Patrick, Dan, and Nick were very intimidating, TJ still found a way to defeat the

men's team. It was later determined that the Colonials just had a lucky meet, and the Woodson men have bounced back and are ready to crush their next opponents.

Woodson Divers Sweep Jefferson
by Kereth Withey

A huge congratulations goes out to everyone who dove in both meets on Friday and Saturday. Stephen Krebs took first place with a score of 312.55. He beat his opponent by a huge margin as always and making every dive perfect, easy, and flawless. Second place went to Doug Roper. He dove excellent as usual. Fourth place goes to Brent Banks who also had a fantastic meet. The guys racked up a huge amount of points, but so did the girls. First place went to Kereth Withey. Second place went to Emily Saunders and fourth place went to Jenn Ryan.
Saturday was another great night for the divers. Once again, first place went to Stephen Krebs as he scored many 8 1/2 and 9 on some dives. (We all know scoring is out of 10). Third place was given to Doug Roper and a fifth to Brent Banks. The girls had a fantastic meet with first place, unfortunately going to Herndon, but Kereth Withey came in second and scored her all time best score of 184. Third place was awarded to Emily Saunders with a score of 145 and fifth place was given to Jenn Ryan. Aisha Salazar and Mary Virginia Thur did awesome and the added a great help to the team. We greatly missed Aaron Bergmann, but we were glad to see him cheer us on Saturday. Everyone did incredible , let's do the same against Chantilly and Potomac Falls this weekend.

The One We Thought Got Away
Saturday night the Cavaliers made up their meet against the Herndon Hornets at Wakefield Park. The girls won every relay and had four first place finishes winning the meet 186-129. The boys won one relay and had four first place finishes and still came out on top with a score of 170-142. The large number of second, third fourth, and fifth place finishes has proven that depth is the key to winning a meet. We also had lots of best times this season at both meets.

Two Meets this Weekend
This Friday night the team goes up against the Chantilly Chargers at OakMarr The team will meet in Cafeteria A at 4:30 and the bus will leave at 5:00 PM. Warm-ups begin at 5:30 PM. We will have a shorter warm-up so that we can recognize the seniors before the meet (see below). The meet will begin at 6:00 PM. "This is a fast pool so we expect to see some speedy times," says Coach Ramsey. After the meet the team will go to Fuddruckers on Rt. 236 for dinner. We are the visiting team so the team will wear their team T-shirts and jeans or warm-up pants to school that day.

Saturday night the team will compete against Potomac Falls at Providence Recreation Center. Potomac Falls does not have any divers so the divers will dive in the afternoon with Marshall's team. The divers will be awarded points but will not be competing against Marshall for these points. This will give one last opportunity to compete before districts. Diving warm-ups are at 4:00 PM and start time is at 4:30 PM. There will be no bus for the divers. All divers are expected to get their own ride and be at Providence by 3:45. Please let Coach Stifter know if you do not have a ride.
The swim portion of the meet will be held later that night (after the Marshall/Park View swim meet). The team will meet in the Lecture Study at 7:00 PM and bus will leave at 7:30 PM. Warm-ups are at 8:15 and the meet will begin at 8:45 PM.

Directions to Providence Recreation Center:
Take Route 50 East and pass the beltway. Take a right on Jaguar Trail Road and then right onto Mark Drive. Turn into the park entrance. The Center is located next to Falls Church HS at 7525 Mark Drive.

Soon, we have to say good bye to the 17 seniors that will graduate this year. Many have been on the team since they were freshmen, some joined us along the way. We want to show how much we appreciate their dedication, spirit, and friendship. Friday night after the warm-ups for the Chantilly meet we will celebrate our Seniors. We would like parents to escort their sons or daughters as the team recognizes our prized Seniors. Parents, please be on the pool deck by 5:45 PM so that we can start the program.

Team Feast
We will have a team dinner at Ned Williams' home this week due to the cancelled dinner two weeks ago. Please bring enough food or drink for 6-8 people.
A-E Salads or Bread
F-Le Desserts
Li-Sa Pasta/Rice Entree
Sc-Z Drinks

Reminder
We are guests when we ride the bus, go to recreation centers, and go to restaurants. Please clean up your trash, act appropriately and treat these places with consideration. Remember you represent W.T. Woodson High School and we want to keep our esteemed reputation.

Quotable Quotes
"I'm making no predictions. I feel fine. I feel great. I'll just swim my best." --Mark Spitz, 1972.
Silence is broken. After completely failing to live up to his prediction at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics that he would capture 5 individual Gold Medals in the swimming events, a wiser and more determined Mark Spitz comes back four years later at the 1972 Munich Olympics to win an unprecedented 7 Gold Medals including 5 individual Gold Medals--all in Olympic and World record times.

According to the book <Sports Physiology> by Edward L. Fox, Diving ranks on a parallel with Weight Lifting, Gymnastics, the 200 Meter Dash, the 100 Meter Dash, Golf, Tennis, and Football on an energy continuum of aerobic vs. anaerobic energy expenditures for an athlete.

Getting Back into the Swim and Dive of Things
It has been almost six weeks since we had our last dual meet. Do you think we can remember how to do it? Keep your fingers crossed that skies will not open up with snow, sleet, ice, a tornado or a hurricane this Friday night.
We compete against Thomas Jefferson who have been our practice partners as well as our rival for some time. This is a big meet for us. We can be beat boys this year and the girls meet will be a close one. If everyone can do the goal times and scores for this meet we can come out winners!
We are the home team so we will dress up for school on Friday. We need to show that Woodson spirit! Please stop by Cafeteria A after school to make posters for the meet. The team meeting will begin at 7:00 PM in Cafeteria A and the buses will leave at 7:30 PM for Wakefield Park. Warm-ups are at 8:00 and the meet begins at 8:30 PM. The team will go to IHOP on Route 29 and Pickett after the meet.

Let's Try this Again!
The Herndon meet is rescheduled for Saturday, January 23rd. The Herndon CC cannot accommodate the meet, therefore, the meet will be held at Wakefield Park (yeah!! It is much closer for us!). The meet will begin at 7:30 PM. The building will not be open so we must wait in our cars until we load the buses. Please try to arrive at Woodson by 5:45 PM. The buses will leave at 6:00 PM. Diving warm-ups will be at 6:30 while the swimmers have a team meeting. Swimming warm-ups will begin at 7:00 PM. We will go to Chili's on Route 29 after the meet.

The Recreation Centers Gods are Against Us
This past Friday's meet against Potomac Falls was canceled due to the ice storm. The snow date was for Saturday, Jan. 30th. Later that day, I was informed that Ida Lee Rec Center does not have this snow date on their calendar (sound familiar?). It is possible this meet will be held at a different center and different time on Jan. 30th or canceled all together. The information will be posted when it becomes available.

Team Dinner at the Krebs
Due to the cancellation of last week's dinner the items are the same for this week's team dinner at Stephen Krebs' house. Please bring enough food or drink for 6-8 people.
A-E Drinks
F-Le Salads or Breads
Li-Sa Desserts
Sc-Z Pasta/Rice Entree

Potomac Falls this Friday
We will be traveling to Leesburg for our meet this Friday night. Potomac Falls is a very small team and should be a fairly easy win. This will be a good opportunity for swimmers to swim events they don't get a chance to swim. Swimmers, please let the coaches know what events you would like to swim and they will try to put you in that event. We are the home team so we will dress up for school on Friday.
The team will meet at 4:45 PM in Cafeteria A. The bus will leave promptly at 5:15 PM. Warm-ups are at 6:30 and the meet begins at 7:00 PM. The restaurant that the team will go to after the meet will be announced.

Herndon Meet Rescheduled for Saturday
The meet is rescheduled for Saturday, January 16th. We have tried to get the time changed to earlier to accommodate those going to the Sadie Hawkins dance. The Herndon CC apparently did not plan in their schedule for a snow date swim and dive meet. The only time we will be able to have the meet is at 8:30 PM that night. We are still looking for other options but as it stands now, the meet will begin at 8:30 PM. We will have a team meeting at 6:30 PM and buses will leave at 7:00 PM. Warm-ups will begin at 8:00 PM. If you have a prior commitment, please let the coaches know ASAP. Because of the late time of this meet, the restaurant will be announced at a later date.

Take 50 West. Take right on Centreville Rd. when you cross over the toll road it turns into Elden St. Pass Sterling Rd and take the next left onto Ferndale Ave. The Community Center is two blocks on the right. Approximate time to the Center: 45 minutes. The phone number is: 810-2200.

The Swimmer's (Diver's) Guide by Dick Hannula-part II
"A PUNKER ALWAYS HAS A GOOD EXCUSE". Making excuses can become a habit. Make a habit of accepting responsibility for your choices, and your actions. There is no room for PUNKERS on our team.

"SUCCESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION". We can't own success. It isn't a destination to attain and forever hold. The success is in the journey, the steps that we take every day in order to attain some goal or success in the future. The process in getting there is the success. This is what we learn and will give us the most joy when we someday look back on our journeys.

"TURKEYS FLOCK TOGETHER WHILE EAGLES SOAR ALONE". Eagles are willing to fly alone, soaring high above other birds. We can all aim high, and try to fly "on Eagles' Wings". We can all become eagles in our training, but sometimes it is necessary to break away from the turkeys first in order to soar as eagles.
In summary: "IF IT IS TO BE, IT IS UP TO ME".

Team Breakfast
There is no team dinner this week, therefore the team will meet at Chesapeake Bagel Bakery at 6:30 AM on Friday for breakfast.

Conditioning Schedule
If you weren't here over the holidays, you missed the introduction to Tae-Bo. Tae-Bo is the hottest work-out in America which blends strength with the ancient arts of self-defense, dance and boxing. All the Hollywood celebrities are doing it, so why not the swim and dive team? Check out their website at http://www.taebo.com for more information. We will review the introduction this Monday.
On Mondays and Wednesday we will meet in Cafeteria A at 3:00 PM for Tae-Bo. Tuesdays and Thursdays the whole team will continue to meet at 3:00 PM in the weight room for weight training. On weight training days we ask that boys do lower body on Tuesdays and upper body on Thursdays. The girls will do the opposite, upper body on Tuesdays and lower body on Thursdays. This should alleviate over crowding on machines. We hope this schedule will be more manageable and beneficial for the team.

Now that the holidays are over and there are no more science project deadlines we hope to see everyone at conditioning and pool practice. Remember you must have a written note from a parent/guardian to be excused from these workouts.

The Swimmer's (Diver's) Guide by Dick Hannula-part I
What are the ten most powerful two letter words? Answer: "If it is to be, it is up to me." This simple statement sums up a lot of truth that can be applied to all aspects of our lives. In my coaching experiences, only those swimmers/divers who took charge of themselves, and trained accordingly, became good and even great swimmers/divers. It is up to me to attend regularly, listen to my coaches and apply their instructions, to race/dive to the best of my ability, and to make the best choices to be a contributing team member.
"The will to prepare to win is more important than the will to win". Talent is only one part of the success equation. The willingness to PREPARE to win is the dominant factor. Practice, repeated practice, is the only path to the top of the competition.
Who is afraid to fail? Those who aren't willing to attempt something challenging are often victims of the "afraid to fail" mentality. "SUCCESS is 99% FAILURE". Every successful swimmer/diver has had to endure some failure. Failure provides an opportunity to become tougher, and more determined. Getting up and trying again takes courage. Courage is a special trait. You can't buy it, but you can attain it through persistence. When you are disappointed, work harder, never, never, never quit. Do more, do it better than before, and above all be persistent in striving for your success. This is an opportunity for our character building that only failure can provide.
