A Season of Success
for the WTW Swim and Dive Team
By the end of Swim and
Dive season the Cavalier team had accumulated a long list of
accomplishments. Winning championships, setting school records,
breaking district meet records and qualifying for All-American
consideration, to name a few.
The season started off
with a successful dual meet record. The Boys finished 5-2 and
the girls finished 6-1, losing only to Oakton. The championship
season began with a very strong team at the Concorde District
meet. It could have been the posters, the cheering or the smooth
legs that inspired the best times and scores. Whatever it was,
nothing could mistake the power of the Girls team.
The power of determination
allowed the Lady Cavs to walk away with the Concorde District
trophy. Marshi Smith led the team with four gold medals. She
won the 100 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke with times that bettered
both District records and she swam on the winning 200 Freestyle
and 400 Freestyle relays. The girls 200 Freestyle relay, which
consisted of Nina Emerson, Lauren Havard, Abby Emerson, and Marshi
Smith also broke a District record. Stephen Krebs and Mark Levin
led the boys to a second place finish behind the Virginia State
Champs, South Lakes. Stephen broke his own District record in
winning the diving and Mark won the 50 Freestyle. A tremendous
effort by all the boys added up to this second place win in the
Concorde District.
The Concorde District is
one of the most competitive in the Northern Region. Most of the
finalists at the Region Champs was from the Concorde District.
Once again Marshi Smith dominated the field in winning both her
events but the team finished second behind the very strong Langley
team. Marshi swam on the school record setting 200 Freestyle
relay along with Nina Emerson, Lauren Havard, and Jacqueline
Stilwell. The boys finished in third place behind South Lakes
and Robinson with wins from Stephen Krebs in diving and Mark
Levin in the 50 Freestyle, setting a new school record. He also
anchored the boys 200 Freestyle relay team that made an All-American
Consideration time. That relay included Nick Zysk, Patrick Hopkins,
and Ned Williams.
At the Virginia State Championship
at the Chinn Center in Woodbridge, it was all about Marshi. Marshi
Smith again was the high point individual winner, winning both
her events, as well as setting a State record in the 100 Backstroke.
Stephen Krebs won the diving event for the boys as he has for
the past three years. The girls and boys both had impressive
finishes. The girls placed third and the boys placed sixth in
a field of more than 40 teams.
In the end there were 6
new school records, 4 new district records, 1 new state record
and 8 All-American Consideration times and scores, three championship
trophies in the display case and a lot of memorable swims and
dives. It was a truly successful season for both the boys and
girls swim and dive teams.
